Born in Barcelona, Joan Martín-Royo holds a degree in History of Art from the University of Barcelona. He also studied composition, piano, violin and bassoon at the Liceu Conservatory. He began his voice studies with Mercè Puntí and went on studying with Carlos Chausson and Didier Laclau-Barrère. He also took part in several masterclasses imparted by Christa Ludwig, Elisabeth Söderström, Sophie Koch, José Van Dam, Thomas Quasthoff and Arnaud Décarsin.

A winner of the Third Prize at the Francisco Viñas Competition (2003) and also “Preisträger” from the Salzburg Mozarteum (2002), Joan Martín-Royo has performed at  Liceu Opera House (Barcelona), Teatro Real (Madrid), Théâtre des Champs Elysées and Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris), Théâtre du Capitole (Toulouse), Théâtre de la Monnaie (Brussels), Palau de les Arts (Valencia), Teatro Regio (Parma), Opera di Roma, Teatro Carlo Felice (Genoa), Glyndebourne (UK), Komische Oper (Berlin), Teatro Municipal (Santiago, Chile), Teatro Campoamor (Oviedo), Kennedy Center (Washington), Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Palau de la Música (Barcelona), Halle-aux-Grains (Toulouse), Palais Bozar (Brussels), National Auditorium (Madrid) and the Salle Philharmonique (Liège) performing Opera (specially the Mozartian and the Rossinian repertoire) as well as Oratorio.

As a recitalist, Mr. Martín-Royo has enjoyed appearences alongside pianists Pierre Réach, Dalton Baldwin, Helmut Deutsch, Marco Evangelisti, Pierre Réach, Norman Shetler and Roger Vignoles on halls such as the Grosser Saal of the Mozarteum (Salzburg), Schubertiades in Vilabertan and Barcelona, Fundación March (Madrid), the Blonay Festival (Switzerland), Festival Piano Pic (France) and the Auditorium Prince Felipe (Oviedo).
