It was in this spirit of renewal that this transcription of the Goldberg Variations for string trio came into being. Produced by the performers themselves, it rises to the challenge of transposing the keyboard’s instrumental gestures onto string instruments, whilst remaining faithful to both the spirit and the style. The version presented by the ALPHEA Trio, the score of which will soon be published, makes wonderful use of the richness of the string trio to create soundscapes that highlight the counterpoint and make this complexly structured writing accessible.
Their performance is both understated and rich, combining a certain freedom from the harpsichord’s instrumental gestures with great stylistic rigour in articulation and phrasing. To achieve this, they have chosen to use Baroque bows, which help to lighten the musical discourse and sculpt its dynamics.
This reworking, enhanced by an inspired performance, fades into the background before the grandeur of this masterpiece, which can be admired in all its splendour.
J.S. Bach stood at the crossroads of our three musical journeys. He brought us together, serving as both the starting point and the destination. Such is his music: it unites us across schools and styles; it is timeless, yet opens the door to constant renewal. To this jewel of his oeuvre, the Goldberg Variations, we wished to provide a setting, that of the rich and vibrant sound of the string trio.
