This transcription of the Goldberg Variations for string trio was born out of a spirit of renewal. Produced by the performers themselves, it rises to the challenge of transposing the keyboard’s instrumental gestures onto string instruments, whilst remaining faithful to both the spirit and the style. To achieve this, they chose to use Baroque bows, which allow for a lighter phrasing and a more finely sculpted dynamic range. The version presented here by the ALPHEA Trio makes wonderful use of the richness of the string trio to create sonic textures that highlight the counterpoint and make this complex writing accessible. The compositional work, combined with the performance, is every bit as demanding and emotionally charged as the original work, much to the listener’s delight.
J.S. Bach stood at the crossroads of our three musical journeys. He brought us together, serving as both the starting point and the destination. Such is his music: it unites us across schools and styles; it is timeless, yet opens the door to constant renewal. To this jewel of his oeuvre, the Goldberg Variations, we wished to provide a setting, that of the rich and vibrant sound of the string trio.
