‘I have always been fascinated by composers’ final works because “it is in these works that one can perceive, more intensely than before, that powerful and unadorned, effect-free surge of the soul towards Transcendence”.’
Johannes Brahms’ Opus 116 (seven piano fantasias) and Opus 122, the very last work written by Brahms in 1886, fit perfectly within this final mystical surge of the composer’s creativity.
I have produced a piano transcription from the organ version of the complete Opus 122 (the only existing piano transcription of the complete Opus 122 dates from 1903), comprising eleven chorale preludes for organ and written in homage to Clara Schumann, who had passed away a few months before the publication of these pieces.
In April 2025, I recorded Opus 116 and Opus 122 for the Indesens Calliope label. The recording of Opus 122, in my piano transcription, will be a ‘world premiere recording’.”
