FROM THE BALTIC TO THE ADRIATIC, FROM VILNIUS TO VENICE
After long and painful years of invasion and domination by various authoritarian regimes, in 1990 the Baltic States freed themselves from the Soviet yoke through the 'singing revolution' to which Mūza Rubackytė committed herself. Since then, she has continued to promote the music of her homeland: Lithuania, the most northerly of the three countries bordering the Baltic Sea. A Parisian by adoption, a citizen of the world, Mūza is also a great Lisztienne, passionate about the Hungarian composer, who travelled all over Europe all her life. In this recital, the pianist will take us on a beautiful journey from the Baltic to the Adriatic, from Vilnius to Venice, in the company of two living Lithuanian composers and a living female composer, and of Franz Liszt, this major European, modern and resolutely rooted in the great Romantic tradition...

Tandis que Leonid Volkov, opposant russe en exil et proche d'Alexeï Navalny, a été agressé hier à Vilnius, s'ouvre la Saison de la Lituanie en France. Lors de la conférence de presse de présentation à l'Ambassade de Lituanie en France (ancienne demeure d'Ernest Chausson), le ministre de la Culture Simonas Kairys, indique être sur la liste noire de Vladimir Poutine, accusé par le Kremlin comme d'autres responsables politiques des États baltes, de mener « des actions hostiles contre la mémoire historique ». C'est dire si la mise en avant de la relation entre la France et la Lituanie se fait dans un contexte particulier. Cette semaine constitue un prélude à la manifestation qui aura lieu du 12 septembre au 12 décembre et proposera plus de 200 événements culturels dans toutes les disciplines ou gastronomiques, visant à renforcer notre proximité et tisser des liens. Par exemple, le Théâtre de la Ville-Sarah Bernhardt, le Centre Pompidou ou le Festival d'Automne consacreront des focus à des artistes lituaniens. Mais la manifestation se déroulera également en régions avec de nombreuses dates à Caen, Bordeaux, Nîmes, Toulouse, Amiens…Notons bien évidemment la présence en récital dans plusieurs lieux cet automne de la pianiste lituanienne, Mūza Rubackytė, dans un programme intitulé « De la Baltique à l'Adriatique, de Vilnius à Venise. » C'est d'ailleurs la pianiste, parisienne d'adoption, qui a donné musicalement le coup d'envoi de la saison hier dans un concert à la Cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides en compagnie du jeune pianiste lituanien Simonas Poška et avec l'Orchestre de la Garde républicaine dirigé par Sébastien Billard. Rendez-vous pris en septembre donc où un écho sur la France sera organisé en parallèle en Lituanie, précise l'Institut français, maître d'œuvre de la manifestation avec l'Institut culturel lituanien. Decided by Presidents Emmanuel Macron and Gitanas Nausėda, the Season of Lithuania in France will run from 12 September to 12 December 2024. The starting point for a renewal of Franco-Lithuanian cultural exchanges, the Season of Lithuania in France will present contemporary Lithuania and its culture to the French public in a wide variety of forms: performances, exhibitions, shows, screenings, debates, conferences, gastronomy, etc. It also aims to initiate long-term cooperation between Lithuanian institutions and artists and their French partners.
Through three main themes - Global Neighbourhood, Diversity and Identities, Unbridled Imagination - the Season's programming will cover a wide range of contemporary cultural phenomena, media and topical themes, sparking creative explorations and reflection on the past, present and possible futures, and addressing Europe's essential values: human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, human rights, creativity and resilience in the face of climate change.
Driven by the idea that "the other is always different but never completely other", as the Lithuanian philosopher Viktoras Bachmetjevas wrote, the Season of Lithuania in France aims to bring our two countries together to understand each other better, and to offer collaborative and inclusive programming that encourages each of us to see ourselves in the other.
General Curator: Ms Virginija Vitkienė (Lithuania), doctor of art history and art critic, curator of contemporary art exhibitions (2004-2022), artistic director of the Kaunas Biennial (2009-2017), general director of Kaunas 2022 - European Capital of Culture (2018-2023).
The Lithuanian Season in France 2024 is implemented by : - The Lithuanian Cultural Institute, an operator of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, - The French Institute, an operator of the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture for France's external cultural policy.
